Action definition

Through a partnership with Culinary Cornerstones USCAA offers a job training program for unemployed or under-employed men and women. Culinary Cornerstones is one of 60 community kitchens operating throughout the United States modeled after DC Central Kitchen, Inc. a non-profit organization in Washington, D.C.

The program teaches a marketable skill, instills confidence, raises self-determination, and reveals hidden talents that ultimately lead to obtaining and retaining jobs. The individuals pictured have just completed their final 12 weeks to receive their certificate of completion as well as a certification from the Food Service industry indicating training in safe food handling. The graduates were also given a certificate from USCAA acknowledging their participation in the Work Experience program.

"Project S.C.O.R.E." Job Fair a success!

United Services Community Action Agency and Penn Valley Community College held their first combined job fair at Penn Valley's Physical Education Building March 15. Tricia Carcopa and the rest of the Penn Valley staff pitched in with USCAA on the advertising, organizing, monitoring, and participation. "This was one of the largest employer turnouts we have had," according to Carole Sanders, USCAA Employment Services Director.

Damon Daniel, Insurance Specialist with Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (The Metro) stated, "I'm very pleased with the applications we have received, we have talked with a majority of qualified applicants."

One highlight of the event included an employer panel of local human resource directors. The panel offered a question and answer segment with job fair participants, covering topics from how to prepare yourself before you go the an employer, what they are looking for on applications, along with how to follow up. "This was the first time we had the opportunity to offer this (panel) to our participants and it was a great success." According to Sanders.

"I got so much good stuff for my clients, it was wonderful," said Linda Buhrmester, USCAA Clay County Case Manager.

Another highlight or addition were 'open' tables set up as applications stations. These stations outlined the job fair and allowed participants a comfortable place to fill out and organize their applications before taking them back to employer booths.

Lashawnda Dockery took advantage of the application stations to fill out a stack she had collected from various employers. "USCAA helped me, I love the program, they showed me how to find a job, go back to school, and stay off assistance. "They (USCAA) don't just help with your lights (energy assistance) they help you get your life together," she said.

Another attendee, Monique Miller, added, "There are no excuses for not working, there is help out there if you really want it."

Although the weather didn't cooperate as well as all volunteers and participants, the attendance still hit a record high. Past USCAA job fairs have average 300, Project S.C.O.R.E. brought in over 315 at last count. USCAA's next job fair will be in the first two weeks of July.
